FOR TWENTY YEARS
Our Mission: Inspire Stewardship of
Pennsylvania's State Parks and Forests

Okay, who's bored listening to me (or anyone else) talk about the weather?! I'll spare you. Just find some shade this weekend, okay? And be glad you aren't somewhere at an event in a Smokey Bear suit! (I hope they're all at home resting up for the big birthday celebrations to come.)

When it's this warm, there's nothing like the cool of a green glade to help like this shot by Michelle Yan from the 2017 Parks & Forests Through the Seasons photo contest ... somewhere in Rothrock State Forest.

News of Note

Header

Members of the PPFF Board of Directors joined members of the West Shore Chamber of Commerce to officially dedicate our new office last week. Also on hand was a staff member from Representative Delozier's office to welcome us to the district. Stop in and see us if you are in the neighborhood!

While we weren't going to talk about it, there are a number of weather-related news items to discuss: flooding at French Creek this week has left the campground and many of the day use areas devastated, predicted heat has postponed a few volunteer events that I've heard about (and probably many more that I haven't) including the Forbes State Forest pop-up trail work for today (trying again next Friday) and new Friends of Michaux for tomorrow (off until August 10). A wise volunteer, event participant, or park/forest visitor will check ahead for the fate of planned activities. Many Pennsylvania steams, lakes, rivers, pools remain open and welcoming!

Speaking of welcoming, the York Revolution is welcoming PPFF for a night of baseball on Saturday, August 17 as the Revs take on cross-town rivals, the Lancaster Barnstormers. Box seats are available for $10/person through this special link ONLY.

Speaking of ribbon cuttings, the new bath house at Colonel Denning State Park is open and ready for business and the rejuvenated Friends of Colonel Denning are hoping that sparks some interest in the group going forward. If Doubling Gap doubles your fun, come to see what's what on Monday evening at 6:00 at Pavilion #1.

The first meeting of a potential Friends of Trough Creek was well-attended with high enthusiasm. The second meeting will take place on August 12 at 6:00 PM in the park's Pavilion #1. If you missed the meeting but would like to complete the planning survey for the group, drop me a line.

Again, Disclaimers for heat postponements are implied if not strictly set forth!

NORTH SOUTH
Here's hoping that the annual Black Moshannon Summer Festival can happen tomorrow without problems. There IS a lake. That helps! The Friends of Greenwood Furnace invite you to their second summer concert on the beach at Whipple Dam on Saturday evening. Yes, a lake there, too!

EAST
WEST
A Sunday afternoon Art in the Park for Kids will keep everyone cook at Nescopeck State Park. Registration required. Saturday is movie night at Keystone State Park with The Grinch on the big screen outside.

UPCOMING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
The second annual Worlds End Day is Saturday, July 27 and the Friends of Worlds End could use some (your) help in making the event a success. Click the button for more information.

These and other fun events and fulfilling volunteer opportunities can be found on the PPFF events calendar and DCNR Calendar of Events. Bookmark them and you'll never miss the boat (or hike or festival).

Nice share from the Forbes State Forest of their barefoot visitor (yes, notice the mud ...) last week. The Facebook post also includes good tips on bears and bear manners (yours, not theirs).

Take Five for Trivia

Header

Well, last week's question was a bit of a muddled mess and I apologize. I ASSUMED that folks read my News of Note that included a reference to Marsh Creek State Park so when I referenced "Marsh Creek" and its watershed in the question ... well, not everyone picked up the implied "state park" in that phrase! Marsh Creek STATE PARK is in the Brandywine watershed and there are definitely additional Marsh Creeks (of the actual creek variety) including one (or more?) that seem to be "up there" in the Sproul State Forest/Wellsboro area. Whoops. I shall choose my language more precisely in future!

Like today! What rank did Colonel Denning hold?

Send in your answer and we'll enter your correct response into our monthly prize drawing. All correct answers each week will go into the hat and at the end of the month we'll draw one lucky winner. The more correct answers you submit in a month (up to four or the occasional five depending on the month), the more chances you'll have to win.
