Accessible Equipment for Pennsylvania's State Parks

It's a Current Designs Solera 120 kayak outfitted with a fully adaptive seat and outriggers for stability and balance assistance - which means that even someone with compromised trunk/core control has the support he or she needs to paddle comfortably.With your support (and the proceeds from our silent auction at the 10th annual awards banquet) we were able to purchase another of these, along with a similarly equipped tandem (with one adaptive seat and one standard), and paddles, other adaptive assistance accessories and personal floatation devices.

With donations in 2014 and 2015, we were able to purchase a handcycle that's now plying the park trails and roads of western Pennsylvania. In 2017, cross country skis purchased for the Susquehannock State Forest allowed beginner skiers to try their hands, feet, and balance on a new winter skill tailor made for lifelong recreation. And kayaks and equipment for Bendigo and Elk state parks are ready and waiting for spring and summer recreation there. 

ADA boat launches are an increasingly popular addition to the state parks' recreation scene since the first launch was placed at Point State Park on the Allegheny River in 2013. Not just for people with mobility issues, the launches provide a safe and comfortable transition for any paddler from ship to shore. PPFF Chapter friends groups are working to place them and individual parks are interested in raising money for them. Donations to this fund can make those plans a reality and move a park from the In Development to the In Place column.
