FOR TWENTY YEARS
Our Mission: Inspire Stewardship of Pennsylvania's State Parks and Forests
At the Beach
Dennis Woytek - Parker Dam State Park
August 28. Let that sink in a minute. And then throw up your hands in resignation. This post from a friend's Facebook really struck me this week.

Dr. Dennis's post from a recent family excursion to  Parker Dam State Park's lakeside beach is a fitting reminder to gather up these last few wonders of summer. He reports that it was a truly lovely day at the beach with appropriate physical distancing and lots of laughter in the air.

News of Note

A time (and paper and money) saving device for us this year was the production of our 2019 annual report as a video rather than a printed piece.  We think it's an effective look at the year in review. Like the photo says, thank you for your investment in our state parks and forests! Find it on our YouTube channel, of course.

Last Saturday, Bill and I delivered to the Forbes State Forest office the last of 14 cases of 12 32-ounce bottles of hand sanitizer donated to state park and forest employees by CPW Equipment of Waynesboro (Franklin County). We took the opportunity to drive up to Laurel Summit State Park, have a little picnic, and stroll out the accessible trail to the Spruce Bog. As you can see, the sky was dramatic and, although the parking lot was full, the boardwalk itself was deserted. The adventure concluded with ice cream, natch. Why not? Bill is this week's jigsaw

Forbes Educator Rachael shared the happy news on Wednesday that the Forest District's trail maps have all been updated and are now available on the DCNR website.

Starting to think fall planting? Check out the "2020 Birdy Dozen" from PA Audubon and include some natives in the plant plan.

Thank you for those who completed the survey to help us with our strategic planning. One item was consistent - you appreciate our advocacy work. We just took a step to make it easier to be a voice for your parks and forests with the acquisition of software which we hope to unveil in September. Not only will it save staff time tracking bills important to our parks and forests, it will make it easier for you to contact your elected officials. Stay tuned for the big reveal!

Reminder! Tomorrow is Paint and Scrape day at the Samuel S. Lewis State Park environmental education center. Join Marci for an hour or two of stewardship for this great little park! Can you help? Sign up here

Pictures of the Week

Thanks to our photographers for this week's look at the great PA outdoors.
The Tuscarora Trail is another of the long (250 miles) and lovely trails that traverse several state parks and forests, and get the attention of your quivering quads.
I don't even fish but I wouldn't mind being in that boat. Photo by Robin Cicero. Scenery by Lackawanna State Park.
The Hiking & Backpacking PA Facebook group is in the final days of its photo contest. You must be a member of the group to vote on one of the ten finalists but not to look at the photos in the running. This one by Dusty Riehl is one of them, randomly selected. I don't know Dusty and no undue influence is intended!
Rain PLEASE! Barry Haldin's post and photos of a hike in the Hammersley Wild Area of Susquehannock State Forest includes note (and a photo) of native trout being left high and dry.
Entries to PPFF's annual photo contest must be received by noon on  September 8.

At Work and Play in the Parks and Forests

As noted previously, events (involving fewer than 25 people) have returned. In any instance, it is always wise to make a call to the appropriate park office or sponsoring organization to make sure an event is truly going to take place or that space is available.

Take Five for Trivia

The correct answer to last week's two-part question on the Commonwealth's tree nursery and wood shop is the Mira Lloyd Dock Resource Conservation Center located in the Seven Mountains along Route 322 between State College and Lewistown.

This week, what large feature of Pennsylvania's landscape can be seen from Samuel S. Lewis State Park?

Send your answer to me and I'll enter you into the month's random drawing for a goodie from the prize closet if you answer correctly. Enter each week for more chances to win.

Where Are We?

Let's show our love for the state parks and forests by improving the camping experience!

All needed 40-amp breakers have been purchased as have all the 4x4s. We've sold two fire rings and 5 50-amp breakers. There are plenty of 2x4s and grills there for the supporting.

"Buy" an amenity through our online store or, if you prefer, support our Charity Go Fund Me. Either way, the money will make happy campers even happier.
