FOR TWENTY YEARS
Our Mission: Inspire Stewardship of
Pennsylvania's State Parks and Forests

Perseids? What Perseids? Ah, yes. Another meteor shower completely engulfed in clouds. C'est la vie, Jupiter near the moon last week was something special to see.

So this week's masthead has to be a remembrance of clear night skies, once again from the Exploring PA Parks and Forests Facebook group, where Bill Sisson captured this gorgeous view at Greenwood Furnace State Park. I'll be there Saturday night following the Friends' Music on the Beach at Whipple Dam State Park. Am hoping that I might be lucky enough to experience this in person.

News of Note

A thank you to the Meadville Tribune and New Castle News for their coverage of  last week's visits to Pymatuning and Moraine state parks. I especially appreciate Marci's comment to "see the beauty, smell the restrooms."

Come out and do those things for yourself during the first week in September:

9/4/19 French Creek State Park 1:00 PM Swimming Pool
9/4/19 Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center 3:30 PM
Nolde Mansion
9/5/19 Nockamixon State Park 10:00 AM
Park Office

The Friends of Trough Creek and Warriors Path are one step closer to chapterhood following a meeting on Monday night - the final prep meeting is set for September 5 at 6:30 PM at Warriors Path State Park where a volunteer project (the nature of which is to be announced) will get things started right. Join in!

How much sand does it take to cover a volleyball court? Just ask the Friends of Colonel Denning. Your next opportunity to play in the sand yourself comes up on August 24.

You have until 6:30 on Saturday evening to purchase your tickets to the York Revolution game. Drat. I cannot be in two places at once!

Your support, and a grant from EQT, empowered the restoration of the gardens at Point State Park. Master Gardeners shared their expertise and skills for this projects to remove invasive species in the park and replace with native plants. Stop by the park and see the progression!

At Work and Play in the State Parks and Forests

As noted above, I will be at the Music on the Beach event at Whipple Dam thanks to the Friends of Greenwood Furnace. This is their final beach concert of the season. And while it says Haystack Lightning is the band it is actually The Crooked Line performing.

NORTH SOUTH

Some bats are making a comeback from whitenose syndrome in some places. Come out to OLE BULL STATE PARK on Saturday evening to enjoy Flight of the Bats.

Smokey Bear makes a return appearance at
Fire Making/Fire Breaking at
SHAWNEE STATE PARK on Sunday evening.

EAST
WEST
A Saturday afternoon Nature Walk to the Swamp at FRANCES SLOCUM STATE PARK provides an easy stroll on a paved path to adventure. Join the Friends of Keystone and our friends at the
Keystone Trails Association for a trail care day along the
Davis Run Trail at KEYSTONE STATE PARK on Saturday morning. It never hurts to let them know you're coming - especially since they are providing the pizza lunch!

UPCOMING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
The Cherry Springs Dark Sky Association is all about keeping you (and me and all of us) in the dark. They do programs in the local community to advocate for dark skies and special lighting; they educate leaders and visitors on proper behavior under the stars. They are, in short, a unique group. Contact Maxine Harrison if you're unique, too!

These and other fun events and fulfilling volunteer opportunities can be found on the PPFF events calendar and DCNR Calendar of Events. Bookmark them and you'll never miss the boat (or hike or festival).

The new Google Photos album is getting a little traction from your visits and I thank you! This photo by Robert Frey at Pine Grove Furnace ("Grandson Hiding Behind Tree") made me laugh as I just enjoyed a few hours with my friends Wendy and Cathy and their six- and seven-year old granddaughters this past week. They take some energy!  Share your photos at https://photos.app.goo.gl/63zYMF2QnCU9JeWx7

Take Five for Trivia

Header

We asked last week what percentage of 2018 wildfires were caused by humans and Smokey says it was 89%. EIGHTY-NINE percent. I'm thinking the Bear's not wrong when we says "Only YOU ...".

This week's question is from our occasional series "Who Were These Guys?" (yes, nearly all guys) for whom a park or forest was named. A former traveling salesman from Vermont, this gentleman eventually owned farm properties, hotels, and mills throughout much of central Pennsylvania including an "up and down" sawmill. The park named for him was much improved by the Civilian Conservation Corps and its day use area is a National Historic District. Who is he/which is this park?

Send in your answer and we'll enter your correct response into our monthly prize drawing. All correct answers each week will go into the hat and at the end of the month we'll draw one lucky winner. The more correct answers you submit in a month (up to four or the occasional five depending on the month), the more chances you'll have to win.
