Our mission: To inspire stewardship of Pennsylvania’s state parks and forests.

We did it, folks! We made it through 2018 - I hope you managed it relatively unscathed and are ready to greet 2019 with a smile and a spring in your step.

We'll keep it short this week in deference to the ongoing week of celebration in which most of us find ourselves. Whether you're working or taking a holiday, here's a cheery Happy New Year from all of us at PPFF - with the hope that the upcoming year finds you enjoying more scenes like the beautiful view of Michaux State Forest captured by Wanda Pritulsky on Christmas Eve. This and a couple more were shared to the Hiking & Backpacking Pennsylvania Facebook group.

With a few days left in 2018, you have a few more days to click over to the PPFF website and make your final year end contribution in hopes of snapping up a little tax deduction before the clock strikes midnight. We'll be grateful and you'll be a park and forest hero!

The story here is First Day (Last Night) Hikes. There's just no better way to jumpstart a New Year's Resolution than to step it off right from the get-go. Bill and I will be doing a First Day Bike I'm pretty sure.

Happy trails!

No matter what region of the commonwealth you want to visit, our website Events and the DCNR Calendar of Events are great sources for things to see and do. Bookmark them!

Way back in November our ExtraGive activities were all cancelled due to snowy cold weather, including the scheduled walk to the top of Hopewell Fire Tower with Forester Joe. Fireman Randy who works in Chester County with his local fire company and is himself a wildland firefighter was able to reschedule a climb and shared this photograph of the view from Up There. I had indicated there wasn't enough money on earth to get me up there. This might almost convince me. Almost.

Take five for trivia

Well, bummer (or colonial equivalent). The Christmas Day re-enactment of Washington's crossing of the Delaware was once again cancelled this year due to said Delaware being just a little on the order of "raging torrent." Last year, winds; this year, rain. This photo from the Black Crow Trading Post website will serve as mute testimony to frustration.

Trivia players did, however, know that General Washington and his band of not so merry men would bound for Trenton had not the Delaware had other plans.

Congratulations to Millie from Bloomsburg, our final winner for 2018 - and to all our players and winners throughout the year. We hope to see you in this space again in 2019.

This one caused a smile and a sigh - a post that also appeared on Hiking & Backpacking Pennsylvania. It did seem like there was an awful lot of Weather getting in the way of Fun in 2018.

Here's to either a "better weather" 2019 or a better attitude. As someone else once wrote, there's no such thing as bad weather. Only bad clothes. Dress appropriately and have a very Happy Outdoor New Year!
